Welcoming a new life into the world, a new member to your family, or a new addition to a community is an occasion for a naming ceremony. Since ancient times, the conferring of a name has been recognized as a symbol of acceptance and of welcome.
Humanist naming ceremonies celebrate the addition of new members to a family or community but do not recognize any supernatural intervention or oversight of their lives. The ceremony can formally recognize friends or family members who have been invited to play a responsible guiding role in the child’s life as ‘guardians’.
A change of name can also be recognized with a naming ceremony, whether it be the celebration of the joining of two families, or the conferring of a special name on someone in celebration of a transition or achievement.
