What does it mean to be a member of Humanist Canada? Message from the Executive Director, Janalee Morris

Greetings Wonderful Humans!

Humanist Canada serves what I often call the “forgotten middle”—those who, in the past, would have been supported and mobilized by their membership in a church or a local community center. These are the people who drive our voluntary sector, support our schools and charities, and keep community associations alive. They are engaged citizens, yet they are increasingly disenfranchised by a growing gap between the rich and the poor and a thinning sense of social connection.

At some point, you chose to connect with Humanist Canada. That choice matters. It means something in our work—advocating for reason, science, and compassion—resonated with you. It means you saw value in a more thoughtful, ethical, and inclusive world. Our work transforms shared values into a collective force. Our members are the heartbeat of our organization. This is what allows us to speak with a stronger voice, support communities across the country, and ensure that humanist perspectives are present where they are needed most.

When you are a member, you aren’t just witnessing this work—you are the vital part of a growing secular movement striving to create a more tolerant world where critical thinking and compassion prevail. Beyond advocacy, membership is about connection. It links you with like-minded people across the country who believe that reason and science are the best ways to understand our world, and that dignity should be the basis of how we relate to one another.

There are some exciting things happening at Humanist Canada, including:

Advocacy & Legislation:

  • Developing position statements on Alberta legislation affecting MAiD and gender-affirming care
  • Advocating for an update to the Statistics Canada census questions on religion.

National & International Events:

  • Co-Hosting the World Humanist Congress from August 7-9, 2026
  • Hosting the Humanist Connections event on August 7, an opportunity for Canadian Humanists to connect

Growth & Education:

  • Launching new Humanist courses for Fall 2026
  • Establishing a new Youth Chapter
  • Increasing support for local chapters and our Officiant and Chaplain programs.

Humanist Canada is more than a list of initiatives; it is a community of thinkers. We are currently creating new opportunities to get involved, including our Secular Think Tank, Tech Team, and Education Committee.

We want to know what a more rational, compassionate Canada looks like to you. If you have ideas, feedback, or a vision for how we can better serve our community, please connect with us. Your perspective is what keeps this movement relevant and resilient. And if you are not yet a member, please consider joining the movement.

In solidarity,

Janalee Morris Executive Director, Humanist Canada
